History

The “ Alecu Russo” State University of Balti was founded in 1945 and it is the second biggest University in Moldova named after the 19th century Romanian ethnologist and illuminist Alecu Russo. It is a prestigious institution of higher education, a modern center of science, education and culture having adequate materials, well-furnished classrooms and well-equipped laboratories. The University is active for 65 years and acquired great achievements in approximately all fields. The old complex of buildings started in 1930s housed the financial administration and three high-schools, two of which were girls only and now has the characteristic architecture of the time but many of the buildings have been added and refurnished recently. The University also houses one of the biggest libraries in the South-Eastern Europe and is an important member of the implementation of the Bologna process in Moldova. Nicolae Filip was Rector of the University for many years, the present Rector of the University is Professor, PhD Gheorghe Popa.

Description

The University has an outstanding reputation due to its national, regional and international collaboration. It trains qualified specialists and well-trained teachers in various areas of education, science and economics every year. After the Republic of Moldova joined the Bologna Process, the University created its own mobility between collaborators and students. Many teachers and University professors as well as students are able to make their own academic and scientific progress in different countries. The University collaborates with many Universities from Romania, Byelorussia, Russia, Germany, the U.S.A and the Ukraine. The University campus is located in a compact manner in the center of Balti on the Pushkin street. The University has the following faculties : Faculty of Engineering and Physics, Faculty of Mathematics and Informatics, Faculty of Philology, Faculty of Foreign Languages and Literatures, Faculty of Pedagogy, Psychology and Social Welfare, Faculty of Music and Music Pedagogy, Faculty of Law, Faculty of Economics, Faculty of Science and Agroecology. The University" Alecu Russo'' is among the list of accredited Universities under the European Programmes.
