Plaza Puerta del Sol is the perfect starting point to explore the city of Madrid. This bustling market, is centrally located one of the most lively places in town.
Puerta del Sol is now the historic heart of Madrid, but last place was at the eastern edge of town. Market name comes from the east gate of the city that existed here in the 15th century. Gate was probably named after the sun painted on it - Puerta del Sol or the Sun Gate. Present semi-oval small square was created in the 19th century.
In the middle market there is a large equestrian statue of King Carlos III. King is looking toward a beautiful red brick building dating from the 18th century, was once the main station in Madrid. In front of the building is located on the pavement plate 'kilometer 0', card marking the center of road network in Spain. It is the place from which all road distances are measured.
Puerta del Sol is the place where the city of Madrid is marked: a 20-tonne statue of a bear that eats fruit from a tree. The official name of the statue is' El Oso y El Madroño ". Madroño tree is a species closely related to strawberry.
