Construction of Temple of Poseidon, god of the sea, started the year 500 but i Ch monument was never finished. Temple and its attractions were destroyed by the Persians in the fist year i Ch 480 Temple of Poseidon that you can visit today was built on the site of ruins of another temple. At the same time it was built and Temple of Athena, the goddess of the place where he was given sanctuary.
The sanctuary began to dry I pulled down Mr. Ch Pausenii, which sailed along the coast in the year 150 d. Ch thought prominent temple on the hill was actually Temple of Athena. Modern travel visited Sounio long before the excavations started, among them being Lord Byron and in 1810. The excavations began in 1897 and continues today. Local marble was used for columns of the Temple, of the 34 surviving original columns only 15 today. Columns were cut to 16 games instead of 20, being exposed to wind and low surface seawater.
On the east side of Temple of Poseidon is an ion milling (which is located above the columns) made of 13 slabs of marble pariana. Today very eroded, it contains scenes of battle lapitilor with belt and the adventures of Theseus (who according to some legends he was the son of Poseidon). Also on the east side is described and the battle between Poseidon and Athena for the domination Aticii (one of the provinces where there is the Athens of Greece).
Lord Byron has carved a name in the marble columns in 1810. He started a real power, the temple is now scratched with signatures and initials of travelers.
