Piazza San Marco is the best known market Venice surrounded by superb cafes and boutiques. In New York, every tourist must go to Times Square, in London should see Trafalgar Square or Piccadilly Circus in Paris even really need to cross the Concorde Square.
Their equivalent in Venice is Piazza San Marco. It differs from its foreign counterparts in two major aspects: it is more attractive and has not been corrupted by car traffic. Napoleon called the Piazza San Marco "receiving the most beautiful in Europe."
The square was paved in the late XIII century with bricks arranged in the mosaic. The 1723 brick pavement was replaced with a more complex compound of trahite (volcanic rocks) and crossed by dark geometric shapes, made of white stones istriene.
Last paving was done in 1890 due to "degradation and fashion. Piazza San Marco is the lowest point in Venice, and because this is the first to drown when there are storms in the Adriatic or even more rain.
