Munich Airport, officially known as Franz Josef Strauss International Airport, represents the sole international airport in Munich. The airport is located 28km in the  northeastern side  of Munich, near the towns of Freising and Erding. In 2005, around  28.6 million passengers used the services of the airport, making it the second busiest airport in Germany after Frankfurt and the eighth busiest airport in Europe. In 2006, it was recognized as the "Best Airport in Europe" for the last two years and the third best in the world. This notable airport is named after Franz Josef Strauss, who seemed to be a high-profile CSU politician who died in 1988.The nowadays airport was officially opened on the Erdinger Moos in 1992. The previous airport was located in the eastern suburb of Riem. The second terminal designed there was inaugurated in 2003. The two terminals of the fabulous structure are beautifully located at a very short distance across the central concourse from each other.
