The project works for the Zurich Airport started in 1948, based on a decision made to erect a grand network of four airports in Switzerland. The four destinations chosen were Zurich, Bern, Basel and Geneva. Zurich was the only airport that supposed to be used for intercontinental air travel. The Zurich Airport had more than 110,000 passengers in its first year. It was later expanded, with the addition of a second runway, that took place during the 1950's, and in 1970 a second terminal was constructed. The underground Swiss rail station was founded at the Zurich Airport in 1981. 

 

Grand  expansions in the last years have added the midfield dock, known as the Gate E, amazing shopping and dining areas as well. The access to the midfield dock is made using the automated underground train or people mover. A third check-in area, perfectly designed by the underground rail station represents a new beautiful addition to the airport also. The Airside Center, constructed also during this fabulous expansion opens Arrivals 1 and 2 together. In 2003, a larger expansion was completed. In 2008, was taken the decision  to renovate the terminal B, including the main terrace being closed to visitors.
