Makalu is considered  the world's fifth highest peak  rising with a height of about 8,463 meters. This beautiful and impressive peak stands beautifully just 14 miles east of Everest in the Khumbu region. Its size and shape is absolutely impressive, but its perfect pyramid structure designed with four sharp ridges makes this wonderful mountain  more and more spectacular. Makalu is actually a double peak. The secondary peak which appears just north of the main summit connected by a saddle is called Chomolonzo and has around 25,650 ft. It is worth to mention  that the summit ridge represents the delimitation  point that indicates the border between Nepal on the Southern side and Tibet to the North.

This amazing area is blessed with a remarkable  diversity of natural beauty and culture. Thanks to its great isolation and lack of tea houses, the area still has some trekkers. One of its treks is difficult and dangerous  without previous experience and takes the tourists to Makalu Base Camp, located at an altitude of about 5250 meters, which is now designed as Makalu Barun National Park and Conservation Area. The trek starts with a flight to Tumlingtar and goes straight to the Aurn River valley to Sedua and Num, then  it goes through the Shipton La Pass into the upper Barun river valley to enjoy a better image of Makalu and Chamlang Himal. This trek takes its visitors to one of the most remoted and not so popular areas of Nepal. The Barun valley represents an important  part of a large international protected area , which stays under the agreement made between the governments of Nepal and China, comprising over 2330 sq. km of National Park and 830 sq. km of conservation area in Nepal.

Probably the name of the mountain derives from the Sanskrit word Maha-Kala, which means Big Black and also is a by-name of Shiva, who is considered one of the most important gods of Hinduism. The Makalu Mountain features another name in the local dialect - Kumba karna, The Giant. Makalu  became a provoking climb, as only five of its first sixteen attempts were truly successful. This route is believed to be very dangerous and risky for climbing.
Makalu peak was mapped and photographed for the first time from the Tibet side by a British Everest expedition in 1921. Although the peak was studied and explored by several Everest parties,  the first really successful climb was not until the conquer of Everest.
Existing formerly as a restricted and protected area, Makalu spans five major ecological zones where  the lush, tropical Arun Valley, dense forests, alpine meadows that lead directly to the might Barun glacier can be seen.
