The Toronto International Film Festival 2010

The Toronto Festival is held annually, by tradition, in September, on the first Monday of the month, when Canada celebrates The Labor Day. The Festival lasts for eleven days, although the award for the contestants is held on the tenth night of the festival. The last day is the results summarizing day, as well as the day of the festival closing ceremony. Thirty seven large screens, on which the films submitted for the competition can be watched, are set in the Toronto downtown. The retrospectives, the films shot in Hollywood studios, the Canadian films, the films from Asia, Africa and South America can be included in the festival contest.

The Toronto International Film Festival is the largest festival in America and one of the most important festivals in the world. Some consider it is the second most important festival after Cannes. The American and the British producers, showing their film at this festival, hope the movies will become favorites of the Oscar race, and much depends on the Toronto audiences and critics. In particular, the glory of "The American Beauty" and "Slumdog Millionaire" began in Toronto.

The History of the Festival

The Toronto International Film Festival is one of the most prestigious film festivals of the world. It is held in Canada since 1976, and its first name was "Festival of Festivals". The films, previously presented at other world film festivals, participated at this festival initially. The festival was held in Yorkville. Later the festival ceremony was moved to Toronto, which is one of the largest cities in the country.

The Festival Nominations and Awards

The main prize goes to the full-feature film, and the winner is chosen by the jury. Such nominations as the best actor and actress do not exist at this festival. The Audience Award is given to the rating winner. Short films are considered as a separate category. Several nominations are given to the Canadian film industry for full-feature and non-fiction films.

Fifteen gala premieres, 35 special screenings and 25 world premieres were shown at the festival in 2010. Robert Redford presented his film "Conspirator" with James McAvoy and Robin Wright in the lead roles. This is a story about a woman accused of President Abraham Linokln attack. For the first time the viewers saw the movie "Never Let Me Go" with Keira Knightley and Carey Mulligan. The movie is about a closed institution in Britain, where students suddenly faced with real life. The new Terrence Malick's film " The Tree of Life", was presented. The main role had to be played by Heath Ledger, but because of his death he was replaced by Brad Pitt. The action of the film takes place in the 50s, and it is a story of lost souls trying to find their place in the world. Clint Eastwood brought his new director's work, "Elsewhere" with Matt Damon and Bryce Dallas Howard in the lead roles. The film is described as a supernatural thriller about three different characters who know the death. Matt Damon presented another movie - the Coen brothers "Real courage", who are the permanent participants of the festival. The film also employed Josh Brolin, and Jeff Bridges. Gus Van Sant brought "The Anxiety" to the festival. It is the story of two teenagers who are worried about issues of death. A young man tries to help the girl to recover after the loss of her parents, and they fall in love. The film actors are Mia Wasikowska and Henry Hopper, the son of the late legendary actor Dennis Hopper. "Black Swan" by Darren Aronofsky is another interesting premiere. Natalie Portman plays the prima ballerina, Mila Kunis is her mysterious rival, and Vincent Cassel is the ballet teacher.

The participation at the Toronto Film Festival is a "warm up" before the nomination of the most famous American Award - "Oscar" for many films. The festival became a vital component of Hollywood's marketing machine through consistent investment and promotion by its organizers and sponsors.

Watching a movie at the cinema with friends is the best way to relieve yourself from the daily stress, but for the lovers of films, a movie is not enough to create such pleasure that defies fun in itself.
For those who want a dramatic set-up or romantic and exotic tone movies, the film festivals are the ideal choice.
A weekend or two weeks of films accompanied by local party creates a relaxing holiday in the most exciting cities in the world that are a perfect destination in itself.
The Film festivals are as luxurious as the beautiful cities that emerge in the brightest stars at the film premieres and parties.
"The most exciting of such festivals is that you can watch videos continuously, from eight to two in the morning," said Jennifer Holt, assistant professor of media studies and film at the University of California, Santa Barbara, quoted by Forbes.
But that's not all: the crowd of fans who enjoy the experience make you quickly integrate with the non-stop movie madness.
"Each film has an impressive audience, even at midnight.
You are surrounded by people, on all sides who share the same passion: films.
It’s so interesting that they forget to eat or sleep," continued Holt.
What surprises the audience is that at the film festivals in Cannes, Berlin and Toronto are premieres.
Telluride Film Festival, a ski resort in the mountains of Colorado, has public movies that were not previously run in American cinemas.
I warmly welcome all lovers of film festivals and I want to say that the main goal of a festival is to increase interaction between various cultures and strengthen friendly relations between them involving its citizens to new works by talented, contemporary authors, performers and creative teams.
I hope this information will be one of the most important and it will let you know about many memorable events.
I wish you, dear friends, new creative discoveries, fruitful journeys, bright and joyful experience.
