Taormina, called also the "pearl of the Mediterranean", is one of the most beautiful cities in the whole island of Sicily.

Located on Mount Tauro, Taormina town is visited by thousands of tourists annually who are looking for an oasis of tranquility. Thus, you'll find a Greek theater on the hill which is still functional. You can see a play on the same terms as the town's population did two thousand years ago. Each year the "Taormina Art", the summer festival, takes place here. The festival includes film screenings, theater, ballet and symphonic music concerts.

Although called the "Greek Theater", it is assumed that it was actually built by the Romans following Greek sketches to be used exclusively by the Greeks. Being so high, the theater offers the audiences an impressive view over the bay. Looking towards the stage, in a clear day you can see the top of Etna. Looking back you can see the sea stretching away to the other side of the Messina Strait.

The Taormina beach is "slightly below" Mazzaro. To get there you must use the cable car which takes you down to the mountain in just two minutes.

The Mazzaro beach is covered with stones. The sand is almost nonexistent, but the sea is very clear, azure blue. No charge for entry and the beach is opened all the year round. And there are fishermen who can invite you to get on their boat for a ride around the bay to the surrounding caves, till the Taormina Cape. You can also rent pedal boats or canoes to ride alone at sea, or you can try a lesson in scuba diving.

Interesting history

Taormina is a historic resort town located on the east coast of Sicily, between the Messina and Catania towns. Situated on the slope of the coastal range at an elevation of 200 m , the town of Taormina enjoys an unrepeatable view over the sea and of Mount Etna, which has an elevation of 3323 m . The mixture of scenic beauty and a mild climate made Taormina a well-known winter resort. There are many hotels as well as many private villas. The city was founded by the natives of Sicily. Taormina was colonized by Greeks at the end of the 5th century BC and shared the political history of the nearby Greek cities before and during the Roman occupation. Its treasured importance outlasted the Roman Empire, but eventually in AD 902 Taormina was destroyed by the Saracens, who later rebuilt the wonderful town. The city prospered under Norman rule in the 11th century, but later declined. Taormina is a popular departure point for tourist excursions to nearby sites, including the grottoes of Capo Sant' Andrea. It comprises a population of more than 10,120 inhabitants.
