Wonderful masterpiece of our Mother Nature

Do  you want to spend the best adventure of your life and you don’t know where to go? Do you want to spend majestic moments close to your partner, and you don’t know what destination to choose? Then think about the Grand Canyon which is the window of the Earth, the most wonderful masterpiece  given by God  to delight our souls and eyes with stunning landscapes. The panorama is absolutely astonishing, with marvelous places where to sit and just admire the unique creation of the Mother Nature. Grand Canyon is the ideal place for romantic couples, who can find  a tranquil refuge, silence and peace, close to  adventurous experiences here. The Grand Canyon is located in the southwestern part of the United States. It is one of the natural wonders of North America, which have a length of about 350 km and offers  an impressive view to tourists. This miracle was created by the Colorado River, over 10 million years ago, and represents a stage scenery that consists of colored stones, attracting archaeologists, explorers and tourists who are overwhelmed by its singular configuration and its majestic colorful views given by its rocks. The dominating colors are bright red to burgundy, alternating with yellow, combined with brown, green and mauve.

The best moment to view the canyon is during the sunset, that reserves a wonderful scenery, a fabulous spectacle of colors. The Grand Canyon with its mile-high, multicolored rock walls, craggy cliffs and sandy slopes is the embodiment of nature’s awesome power. The first sensation when you get to see the canyon is startling and amazing, as if you were on another planet. There are harrowing feelings  that you need some time to realize where you are, so you can find yourself. The Grand Canyon is the biggest canyon in the world, bordered by two mountain peaks, called North Rim and South Rim. The wonderful canyon is a special defile, with the Colorado River on its bottom,  dug  deep in its rocks. The Grand Canyon is housed in a huge, well-preserved national park , called the Grand Canyon National Park. The park includes several hotels, restaurants, gift shops and souvenir shops, a small museum, with maps, leaflets, and a lot of information about the history of the canyon. It was one of the first parks created in the United States, in 1919.

The geology of  the Grand Canyon

No one knows for sure how this unique landscape and full of mystery was formed. The truth is that a large number of processes combined to create the views that we can admire today at the Grand Canyon. The most powerful force that influenced the formation of the canyon is the erosion, made by water and by wind. Other important forces that had  a great impact on its formation are the course of the Colorado river itself, the  volcanism, the  continental drift, the slight variations in the orbit of the earth, which cause variations in seasons and climate. But the water seems to have the most powerful impact because our planet has a lot of water that is always moving. Many people cannot understand how water can have such a powerful force and impact, because actually the canyon is located in the desert. When it is raining the water tends to stream down in torrents, that only cause new impacts. The plants that grow in the canyon have very shallow root systems, so it makes them  grab as much water as possible, in those rare occasions when it rains. Unfortunately these root systems do not help to avoid the erosion, when holding the soil in the same place. Nowadays there is a lot of water, no place for it to go, but down to the river of Colorado, and nothing holds the soil and the rocks together.

What is going on as a result is that frequently it creates a flash flood roaring down a side canyon that can move huge boulders, which have the size of automobiles, buses or even houses. That is why you have to be always informed about the weather conditions when you  plan to hike through the side of canyons.  Ice is another powerful force  that causes erosion. During the winter months, especially in the North rim, the water steeps into cracks between rocks. These cracks can be caused by seismic activity, because when the water  freezes it expands  and pushes the rocks apart, in this way it widens the cracks. After this the rocks near the rim are pushed off the edge and fall down into the side canyons. On their way down ,the rocks can hit some other rocks, sometimes causing a cascading  effect and forming a rock fall that will dramatically modify the landscape of the side canyon . The erosive action of the Colorado river  strictly compelled by the building of the Glen Canyon Dam, which ended the annual spring floods. The river’s spring floods were carrying away all the debris which was deposited in the main channel by the flash floods.

Many people ask themselves “why the canyon looks like this?” The reason that it looks so isn’t    because of the sequence in which the events  help to form what happened. As we already know  there  was once a very tall chain of mountains that occupied the Grand Canyon in the area. Eventually, over the time the mountains were eroded and formed a level plain. The changes and the fluctuations of the climate  caused the ocean to move in successive periods, thus depositing new rock layers everytime. The rock layers were deposited one on top of the other one, and over the time, in different periods the layers were eroded away or sometimes eroded completely.
