About Troodos Mountains

The Troodos Mountains are spreaded with Orthodox churches, ten of them are included in the UNESCO World Heritage List. These are medieval churches like: Stavros tou Ayiasmati, Panayia tou Araka, Timiou Stavrou at Pelendri, Ayios Nikolaos tis Stegis, Panayia Podithou, Assinou, Ayios Loannis Lampadisis, that are exclusive sacred masterpieces. All the area is almost covered by pine trees, in the forest the tourists can find several picnic places. Away from the beach areas you will find fascinating traditional villages where you can explore and discover many remaints that are untouched by the tourism or development. There are attractive destinations that offer breathtaking scenery to admire.
A well known and interesting trail is the Caledonia Falls, that follows a stream to an incredible waterfall. A spectacular village that you should visit is Kakopetria, a beautiful village, with a quarter area protected by state. The tourists can get to admire the local chairs made from wood and straw, concentrated in the old part of the village, which preserved the traditional architectural character. The middle of the village is a perfect place for relaxations and leisure featuring excellent tavernas and restaurants. The village includes many attractive churches and spots for visiting, one of them is Agios Nickolaos tis Stegis which is very famous and has impressive murals that date back from the 11th-17th century.
Another remarkable attraction is Kykko Monastery the most excellent in Cyprus which was constructed in the 12th century, with a golden icon representing the Virgin Mary, that supposed to be painted by St.Luke. The gorgeous icon is deemed to sacred to look at and is covered in a well worked silver plate. The throne, situated nearby include the tomb of Archbishop Makarios, which was turned into a shrine.
One famous village on Troodos Mounatins is Pedhoulas, well known for its cherries, where you can also visit the church of Archangel Michael, which belongs to the year of 1474, featuring narrow steep streets. Omodos is an amazing village situated about 11km from Platres, in Troodos Mountains, and represents a famous wine producing village. In tne centre of Omodos is the Monastery of Stavros that holds some stunning wood carvings, old icons and religious works, that area valuable treasures for the church.
