Chateau de Chillon is one of the most beautiful and well- preserved medieval castles form Switzerland. It is the most enchanting place that you have ever seen in the country, charming with its antique style and decorations. It is beautifully located on a rocky islet, just few steps away from the majestic Lake Geneva. This Swiss medieval fortress is perfect to visit on a day trip with your family, it is a truly spectacular place, which charms everyone through its unique beauty. The castle was firstly mentioned in the middle of the 12th century, when the Savoy counts founded it to protect the strategic route of trade that ran from Italy to the upper Rhone Valley of the Lake Geneva, to the other attractive destinations north of the Alps Mountains. For a long period of time this elegant and romantic castle was a wonderful property of the House of Savoy, that ruled that part of the country. Chillon Castle was the ideal residence for the Dukes of Savoy, as well being as a prison and a storage space. 

 

The castle has been extended and modified, to become more comfortable, that was done by the Savoy family, while they  enjoyed their lives here. The chateau had never  suffered from the war damages, it was always stayed in, and was well maintained throughout the years. The castle has large windows that open spectacular views over the stunning lake. In 1536 the castle was conquered by the Bernese, who occupied the magnificent castle in just two days, transforming it into the main residence of the Governor. The people who lived near the Lake Geneva and spoke French were inspired by the revolution in Paris. They sent away the Bernese, in the 1798s. After that the castle was offered to the present owners, the Canton of Vaud. Chateau de Chillon castle featuring a great residential area, was used also used as a hospital , as a prison, as an armory, a warehouse. After this it was transformed in a major touristic attraction of Switzerland. The castle was a beautiful inspiration for romantic artists like Victor Hugo and Lord Byron, but it was visited and appreciated by Geothe, Dickens and Hemingway too.  The Chateau de Chillon charms the visitors’eyes with unique displays of weapons, mobile furniture in Swiss style, the tingly views of the castle. They  get to admire the dank prison, and some more exciting areas in the castle.
