The Rhine Tower
Main Information
The Rhine Tower is the highest point in Dusseldorf City. It is a 240.5 meter high concrete telecommunications tower in the capital of the federal state (Land) of North Rhine-Westphalia, Germany. Construction commenced in 1979. The Rhine Tower was inaugurated on December 1, 1981. It contains 7.500 cubic meters of concrete and weighs 22.500 tons. Before October 15, 2004 when, an aerial antenna for DVB-T was mounted, it was 234.2 meters high. This is a really huge construction and it can be seen from a few kilometers away. It is located in a really pitoresque place, in Düsseldorf district called Unterbilk, nearby the Stadttor, which is an amazing architectural modern building. It was built near the canal and is surrounded some incredible buildings.
The Rhine Tower carries aerials for directional radio, FM and TV transmitters. It stands 174.5 meters high and houses a revolving restaurant and observation deck at a height of meters at 170th it is the tallest building in Dusseldorf.
The main facilities
The Rhine Tower has an observation deck that is open to public people, every day. Visitors can come and can observe, as a special attraction, a light sculpture on its shaft which works as a clock – the Lichtzeitpegel, which is a light sculpture on the tower’s shaft. This sculpture was designed by Horst H. Baumann and is called light-time levels (light time level). The light sculpture on the Rhine Tower is the biggest digital clock in the world. That’s why, this is another stimulus to come here and see this construction. On the two decks there is a small bar/cafe where you can rest and thirst quenching.
Also, on the Tower, one level up, there is a revolving restaurant in which you can enjoy the panoramic views over a meal. The Rheinturm in Dusseldorf provides excellent views across the whole city. It is very reasonably priced. I'd recommend visiting both at day and night to get two completely different perspectives. In daytime you can have a great picture of almost the entire city. Also, on a clear day it is possible to see Cologne (40KM). At night, you can see the incredible lights and how it seems like the city is in flames.
In the City of Düsseldorf, a few inventors had built an exact scale replica of the Rheinturm in Second Life. Visitors to the virtual version experience the same views from the top of the tower as do visitors to the real version.
