Vigeland Park is a great treasure for the city of Oslo, who was dedicated to Gustav Vigeland, who made those spactacular sculptures that beautify the park. The park covers an area of about 80 acres, and includes 212 sculptures, all modelled by the famous sculptor Gustav Vigeland. He designed the architectural style of the park and also the layout of the ground. All the splendid sculptures are arranged on a 850 metre long axes which divedes in 5 amazing units: Main Entrance, The Bridge with the Children’s Playground, The Fountain, The Monolith Plateau and the Wheel of Life, which form a great view over the park, surrounded by a very pleasant atmosphere. Gustav Vigeland designed his all sculptures in bronze, granite or wrought iron gates, he made them in full sizes that appear today with no help from other artists.
Valuable history
The construction of the park lasted few years till appeared how it looks nowadays. In 1924 the west area of the park was offered to Vigeland to built there The Fountain, The Monolith and the other sculptures that will be included in the Monolith Plateau. In 1930 the park was extended on the east, on the older Frogner Park. The new area supposed to include a bridge and a main gate to enter the park made of granite and wrought iron. Vigeland did not get to see his park completed, it was finished in 1950, due to the contribution of the Municipality of Oslo, who make the dream of Vigeland to come true. A large number of generous persons and companies helped with financial support at this amazing park, so that Oslo could receive an unique and extraordinary park, like is no one in the whole world, being a precious treasure for the city.
Main Gate
The beginning of the long axis is marked by the Main Gate, hat is made of granite and wrought iron. The Main Gate consists of five large gates and two smaller gates for pedestrian made of wrought iron, designed in 1926. The Main Gate was raised up in 1942, with the financial support from a Norwegian Bank.
The Bridge of the park
The brigde from the park has 100 meters long and 15 meters wide, constructed on the top of an old bridge dating from 1914. The bridge of Vigeland was constructed between 1925 to 1933, and was modeled with 58 sculptures made in bronze, lined with lanterns. The sculptures on the bridge represent childrens, women, men, of different ages, lined in groups ar alone. This design wants to reflect the relationship between the the adults and children, or between the woman and man. One of the most popular sculpture in the park is the” Angry Little Boy”. The sculptures that beautify the bridge are the latest arts of Vigeland dedicate to the park.
The Fountain
The greatest sculptures in the park is the Fountain that has the longest history. The idea of construction of the fountain came in the artist mind since the turn of the century. A project that ressembles the fountain was designed since 1906. Later, in 1919 an impossant granite column became a important part of the plan. In 1924 it was found the perfect location for the future fountain. The 20 tree groups were modelled, and six huge supporting the large vessel were forming a monumental outlook. It took a long time till the fountain was completed, and in 1947 was finally installed. The surface that surrounds the fountain is about 1800 square meters mosaic made of black and white granite.
The Monolith Plateau
The highest point in the park is represented by the Monolith, that raises up on the Monolith Plateau. This huge monument includes 121 figures with a total height of about 17 metres. The Monolith was graved in one single stone, of granite. This splendid art represent the eternal life cycle, offering an magnificent view over the figures of human that are holding one by one. In 1947 on the Monolith Plateau started the installation of the 36 figures. Vigeland started to work on these granite sculptures when the First War started and he finished his work in 1936. The access to the Monolith Plateau is made by eight gates that are describing the man in different ages. The Wheel of life was modeled and designed by the artist between 1933-1934. This Maestic wheel represents the symbol of eternity, described by the children, women and men holding each other. This sculpture is the main theme of the park: the journey of the man, living different impression and sensations, going through happiness, grief, sadness, fantasy, from hope to the wishes of eternity.
