Carlsbad Caverns National Park is a gorgeous and beautiful park, famous for its underground caverns and for its deepest limestone cave, which lies for about a mile below the level of the earth. Carlsbad Caverns National Park was first inaugurated as a national monument in 1923. Later ,in 1930 was recognized as a national park, also designated as a World Heritage Site, in 1995. The park was meant to preserve the Carlsbad cavern and other mysterious underground caves, dating from the Permian ages. The National Park includes more than 83 caves, with the most deep limestone cave(469meters), which is the third longest one for the American Nation. Carlsbad Cavern is one of the largest cave in the world, which has underground chambers and numerous formations, that are accessible the year-round, there being organized the guided tours. The decoration of the Carlsbad cavern with stalactites and stalagmites began over 500,000years ago. This process was going slowly, when a wet and cool climate prevailed in that region, facilitating the development of this cave with such beautiful formations. Each formation was created due to the water that dripped down into the limestone and into the cave. The chambers of the cavern are up to 250 feet high being beautified by the spectacular formations of different colors and shape.
No one should miss the opportunity to visit the Big Room. To reach this amazing landscaped room the visitor are taken with an elevator, descending 754 feet in only one minute. This Big Room has 3,800 feet long and 600 feet wide , with a large variety of huge formations. The path that follows a circular route down, has 1.2 miles. This route goes on one side of the cave, then goes back on the other side of the cave, this parts of the trails are never met each eacr other because the cave is very large. There are more than 20 amazing speleotherms that received an official name, like Hall of the Giants, Temple of the Sun, Rock of Ages, which are lighted by the electricity, creating a majestic and spectacular image. All the cave appear natural because of the white light. Some areas in this cave have underground pools, that are also illuminated, that reflect another dimensions to the formations from the interior. The main trail feautures many gates that close some unused path, to the unexplorable caves, as the Bottomless Pit, that is 370 feet deep. Almost all the routes in the Big Room are wheelchair accessible, with a non slip surface, for the visitor’s safety. The Big Room is a huge room, that has a surface of about eight football fields combined. The Carlsbad Cavern include the most unusual formations, which are the helictites, which grow without regarding gravity, their twisted form are governed by crystal shapes, from the impurities from the water. Another delicate formations that can be admired in the caves are formed by aragonite, a chemicall mineral, not identic with the calcite, but with a separate structure. This formations appear very small and delicate.
Caverns National Park is open every day of the year, excepted,December 25. The park has two main entries, one is the Cacesern Historic District and the other one is the Rattlesnake Springs Historic District. The park features a lot of natural and unexplorable beauties, including 17 species of bats that live in the park. The park is the perfect home for some plants like yucca, ocotillo, Texas Black Walnut and desert willow. The park also boats a wildlife, including mule deer , coyotes, bobcats, rattlesnakes, and pumas, that are the mountain lions. This amazing park is the perfect destination during the summer time, when everything comes to live and the nature is gorgeous. The impossant Carlsbad Cavern is anyway the most exclusive site in the park, leaving a great impression on the visitors. The interior of the cavern is fascinating, astonished , creating an extraordinary spectacle through its delicate formations illuminated, giving to the cave an enigmatic ambiance.
