The National Gallery of Art is the most impressive galleries in United States including one of the most large collection of sculpture and art. The idea of creating an art gallery came from the Congress, in 1937, who decided to build a structure where people would find the best art works. The multi millionaire Andrew Mellon donated for the gallery a collection of about 141 works of European Art. Soon the gallery became more attractive and new collectors came with donations of very important pieces of art. The President Franklin D.Roosevelt created a very gorgeous home for the National Art Gallery, situated at the National Mall. The west building of the gallery was constructed on the same place where the President Garfield was killed, in 1881. The collection of the gallery started to grow very fast, due to the fact in 1978 an East Building was added to the West Building, and now stand adjacent to each other.
The connection between the buildings is making through a tunnel, and the architectural style of the buildings is different. The West Building was the first one, that is designed by John Russel Pope, who had also designed the Jefferson Memorial, later on. He used for that building a neo-classical style, creating a large dome and columned portico, inspired from the Pantheon. This building is the home for works dating since 19th century, includind arts of the European and american artists, since the medieval period. Because it was created later, the East Building reflect a modern style. It houses the most beautiful modern and contemporary collections. The building was designed by I.M.Pei, who has built it in a geometrical form, representing prisms that are molded together to create the whole building. The visitors an also admire the Sculpture Garden of the National Gallery of Art, that include various art works , with a circular fountain in the center, that can be used as a ice rink during the winter time.
