Kaiserdom is also known as St.Bartholomew Cathedral of the Emperors, that was built in the 13th century. In the city of Frankfurt this cathedral represent a treasured artwork, the most valuable and notable building standing here for hundred of years. This is a very famous church due to the fact that all the German Kings and Emperors of the Roman Empire were elected and crowned in this sacred place. The first church that was discovered on Kaiserdom territory seems to be built since 680 A.D, the second large church, named St.Salvator was built around 850A.D, the base of this precious buildings can be seen inside the Kaiserdom. The construction of the cathedral started in 1250 next to a chapel designed in Merovingian style. Kaiserdom was the fifth church on this spot and was dedicated to St. Bartholomew. It suffered a lot of changes and modifications and during the time got the Ghotic style that still can be admired today. In 1356 the Emperor Charles IV decided that the church will be used to crown new kings, till 1562 when were still elected the German Kings. Due to this important events the church was named the Kaiserdom or the Emperor’s Cathedral.
The Emperor’s Cathedral was strongly affected by a massive fire in 1867, but very soon was rebuilt, in 1880. At the end of the World War II the Kaiserdom suffered badly and was destroyed. It took four years to rebuilt the cathedral again, appearing as a magnificent imposant building. The interior of the church has a symmetric , cross shaped floor design. The interior features a lot of interesting treasures like the huge painting of “Van Duke”, stone “Maria Schlaf”, that is a very precious altar, dating since 1434, which is situated in the Mary Chapel. The altar represents the painting of the Virgin Maria dying surrounded by the apostles. You can also admire the wooden endpieces fom the choir stalls, dating since 1352. At the entrance you will be fascinated by the crucifixion group by “Backofen”, made in 1509. You definitely should see the Election Chapel, where 16 from the 23 German Emperors were elected here in this small amazing room. The Election Chapel can be visited daily and is a very quite and warm space.On Sundays the visitors can see the scrape of St.Batholomew near the organ when the case is opened and lit up.
A new white altar was added to the cathedral in 1994 and stands in front of the choir. The Kaiserdom’s Ghotic tower was added to the church in the 15th century. It designed with a very tall spire that reaches 95 meters high. The tower was added in the 19th century when the building was restored because of the fire. It offers a spectacular view during the night, when the Kaiserdom is illuminated. On the right side of the building is a gate that allows to get to the top of the tower, climbing 328 stairs that takes you to a dramatic view over the city of Frankfurt. You will be astonished by this beautiful Ghotic Cathedral that is a perfect place for meditiation and prayers. In the cathedral is a small cloister which houses the Dommuseum, where the visitors can see unique exhibits, relating the history of the Dom, with is significant glorious moments, that it passed through.even if it was destroyed and suffered a lot of changes the Kaiserdom Stands now as a blooming flower wainting for the prayers to inspire with its pure and warm spirit of faith. The imposant building is charming each tourist or pilgrim offering a great spot for releasing the mind, soul and body from any trouble and difficulties, finding here the peace and the immortal silence.
