The Catlins Coast
The Catlins Coast is a picturesque natural aria of New Zealand which is very wild and attractive. The Catlins area covers about 1,900 km2 and forms a rough triangular shape. The coastal limits of this aria are marked by two large rivers, the Clutha River in the northeast and the Mataura River in the west. These rivers provide some important estuarine habitat for wading birds. The rocky, charming coastline of the Catlins features blowholes, sandy beaches, a petrified forest at Curio Bay, and the Cathedral Caves. Cathedral Caves are a series of sea caves and are one of the most popular tourist attractions in the area. The aria has unique fossil forests with all kinds of seabirds and mammals, native plants, a big number of waterfalls. Also there are picturesque wild beaches.
The Catlins Coast features solid temperate rainforest, which is dominated by podocarps. This aria has over 500 square kilometers of forest and is the largest area of native forest that remains on the South Island's east coast. The specific trees in the forest are rimu, totara, silver beech, matai and kahikatea. The Catlins coastal daisy is unique to the region, and is related to New Zealand's mountain daisies. The Catlins is a major highlight of the Southern Scenic Route. Due to its placement, besides the podocarp forests and coastlines, the Catlins Coast holds some stunning waterfalls like The Purakaunui Falls - a cascading multi-tiered waterfall of great beauty. Also it hides some lakes like Lake Wilkie, which was formed behind sand dunes after the last ice age. The natural landscapes are enthralling and the wildlife is extraordinary.
The southern part of The Catlins Coast is perfect for exploring, especially in the summer days. Stunning sunsets and long twilight evenings guide on to perfect star-gazing opportunities. Rainy days are also positive, because it brings fresh air. Also in rainy days it can be seen a unique image like when the strong winds shape the forests and raise impressive waves along the coast. A lot of tourists came in this place just to enjoy the dynamic weather conditions. One of the most spectacular points on the coastline is Nugget Point. Nugget Point is one of the most iconic landforms of the Catlins Coast and is a home to many seabirds, including penguins, gannets and spoonbills, and a large breeding colony of fur seals. From this point it opens an amazing view.
Another amazing place that is located in the The Catlins Coast is is Purakanui Bay. It’s a spot with rugged cliffs on one side and farmland on the other. Is a really typical Bay on the south Catlins coast of, but is the most spectacular one. Over millions of years, wave action and wind erosion have created just about every coastal landform imaginable. Fur seals, sea lions and penguins are very much at home on this coast.
