Tel Aviv, Israel's economic capital, is the second largest city after Jerusalem and it is located on the east coast of the Mediterranean Sea. It is the most modern and western-oriented place in Israel. Jerusalem is the official and religious capital (although internationally unacknowledged), and Tel Aviv seems to be the capital (almost officially recognized). Due to the fact that Jerusalem is not acknowledged as the capital of Israel, in Tel Aviv there are located the embassies of almost all countries having diplomatic relations with Israel, as well as the offices of many ministries and other government institutions.

Tel Aviv was founded in 1909 and soon became the center of Jews arriving in Palestine. Initially, these were mostly from Russia and Poland. Once the Nazis came to power in Germany, they started to pour into Palestine, many of them settling in Tel Aviv. This fact is reflected in the architecture of the city - architects of German schools worked here. In 1948, the Declaration of Independence of Israel was proclaimed, Tel Aviv becoming its capital.

In Tel Aviv there are no historic sights - it is a very young city. But there are oyster bars, eclectic architecture, sun-drenched golden beaches, ultra-nightclubs, elite boutiques and another - the samba on the beach on summer evenings. Here you will find the greatest concentration of youth.

It is an enormous pleasure to walk on the seaside shore, the main promenade of the city, which stretches for several kilometers from the northern part of the city to Jaffa. Jaffa is the old Arab city. It is much older than Tel Aviv and it is now a kind of Latin Quarter of the city. Although it has many modern boutiques, it still retains the atmosphere of an Arab city. With its quarter of artists, wonderful seafood restaurants, flea markets and night clubs, it will charm and enchant the most experienced traveler.

A good place to do shopping is Sheinkin Street; Kikar Hamedina is known for its luxury shops and Azriely center, Ramat Aviv mall and Dizengoff center certainly will satisfy your thirst for shopping. You can visit the street market and the street Shuk HaCarmel. On the streets of Basel and Rothschild one can find the best cafes, while on Allenby, Lilienblum street and in Tel Aviv port there are the night parties and bars.

Tel Aviv is the undisputed cultural capital of Israel - it hosts dozens of concerts and theater halls, numerous museums and galleries. The city has three repertory theaters (Habima, Gesher, "Chamber Theatre), several ballet ensembles, many rock and jazz bands, performing on small stages. Museum of the Land of Israel focuses on various aspects of the past in Israel. The entire museum complex is centered around the site of archaeological excavations, which reveals the city since the Philistines.
