Marine Building is a gorgeous skyscraper in British Columbia, Vancouver, very famous for its Art-Deco style. The designer of this huge building is J.W Hobbs, originally from Toronto, who decided that Vancouver need a skyscraper, because the city was a very important port, after was open the Panama Canal in 1914. It is situated on the Burrad Street with a great view on Vancouver harbour , that soon became a very important port there. The imposant building had been named Marine Building, decorated in an Art Deco style , that made it to be the best Art Deco building in the world, on those times. The building was inugurated in 1930 and cost over 2.3 million dollars.
It has a height of about 97 meters with 21 floors. The exterior is designed with a lot of pieces of flora and fauna with golden highlights, included a lot of windows for which were needed 2,100 panes of glass. The interior is decorated in a ocean theme. Just opening the huge doors you will pass in a very long lobby, of about 27 meters, designed with crabs, turtles, seahorses, snails. This ambiance will make you feel like you in the ocean for real. The buiding has five elevators also decorated in a unique and exceptional style, with very solid doors. The elevators are very fast, they take you to the top in just few seconds. In the lobby on the wall stands a very strange clock, when the big hand is on the starfish and the little hand on the crab that means that is 6 o’clock. The floors are decorated with the zodiac signs, and were renovated and covered with white marble.
During the 19th century on the top of the building was a penthouse that could be riched with the elevator only, included 2 stories and 3 levels with a terrace. Now the building is the homeland for many business offices. Its sea green colour makes the building to look spectacular during the day when the sun lights it. Walking around or inside the building the ocean theme decoration will take you in the middle of the ocean surrounded by turtles, craps, maritime herbs and little marine animals. It’s worth to make a visit to Marine Building because is a real unique and spectacular masterpiece unrepeatable in the whole world. Its Art Deco style, that was perfect in 1920 still keeps its beauty and charm, fascinating everybody.
