  Mali is a country situated in Western Africa and shares borders with Senegal and Mauritania to the west, Niger to the east, Algeria to the north,  Burkina Faso and the Côte d'Ivoire to the south and Guinea to the south-west. The largest country in Western Africa, Mali has the shape of a butterfly with the left wing much smaller than the right one.  

  Mali is currently in the process of economic and tourist development. Although it is one of the poorest countries in the world, the country is one of the most politically and socially stable states in Africa and boasts some incredible tourist attractions. The great tourist potential makes Mali a highly appreciated destination. Even if it cannot compete with the most important countries in Africa offering safari, Mali is a country with a special charm. Alike Egypt, Mali is a country strongly dependant on a river, in this case the Niger River. Niger is an essential life source and important transportation way, as well as an excellent tourist route for those who love to travel by water. Moreover, Mali is one of the most interesting cultural locations on the African continent. The legendary Timbuktu is located here, while in the centre of the country, the splendid Bandiagara can be found here, testimony to the fascinating Dogon culture.    

  The major sites to be visited while in Mali are the following: the capital city, Bamako, the cities of Djenne, Gao, Timbuktu and Mopti with mosques and great ancient Arab monuments; Segou with antique vestiges of Bambara culture; certain areas of Niger and Senegal rivers.

  The best time to visit Mali is between November and January. In November, the highest number of tourists is recorded in the country.
