The Bulgarian Cave Ludenika is situated near the town of Vratsa, at Okolchitsa Mount. It is one of the most mysterious caves in Bulgaria at the altitude of 800 meters. It has its name for its high crystals that grow here during the winter. Ledenika cave was firstly found in 1961, and in 1962 was recognised as one of the most amazing landmarks in Bulgaria. When researchers first found these underground labyrinths, they were impressed by the huge blocks of ice and ice lakes. All this ambiance reminded them about the heroine, Snow Queen from the famous Anderson fairy tale.

The cave has 10 halls, each of them has its own characteristics. The first Pervy hall is named the Threshold hall. In winter and spring here grow icy stalactites, waterfalls and all sorts of ice strange shapes. Through this room the cave got its name – Ledenika. There are also the halls Plyznyata, Malkata, the Concert hall. The Concert’s hall size is about 45 meters and it has a maximum height of 22.7 meters. The Concert hall has an excellent acoustics, and it often hosts orchestrate concerts.

The cave’s walls are covered by a nature’s ice curtain, and the cave’s top is decorated with thousands of stalactites and other cave’s ice figures. The last room, the highest part of the cave is called the Seventh Heaven. For the most adventurous is available the Snake hall, perfect for cavers. The cave occupies the 16 place in the list of the 100 tourist destinations in Bulgaria. During the summer, the cave’s temperature is above 15 degrees.

The cave is open to visitors all year round. The cave’s vegetation consists of mosses and lichens, and the fauna represents only bats, fireflies, spiders and cave beetles. Under its walls are present dozens of crystal clear lakes and small rivers, the water remains ice-cold even in summer. According to the legend, if you put your hand in the water and while make a wish, it will definitely come true.
