  Mongolia is a country in Eastern and Central Asia. It shares borders with Russia to the north and China to the south, east and west. 38% of its total population is concentrated in Ulaanbaatar, the capital and largest city in Mongolia. 

  Mongolia is known for its wild nature, nomadic culture and hospitable people, which attract foreign tourists from around the world. Government of Mongolia has acknowledged tourism as a priority sector with a high potential to contribute to the economic development of the country. However, due to low numbers of international flights, poor infrastructure, slow and uncomfortable local transportation and hotels with poor conditions, the steady development of tourism remains a challenge for Mongolia. In 2003 there registered about 230,000 tourists, mostly coming from Japan, USA and Europe.

  The tourist season is from May to October, but one can visit Ulaanbaatar any month of the year. Early July offers the most pleasant weather in the north and that is also the time when Naadam festival takes place. The best time to visit the Gobi Desert is in September and October when temperatures are bearable. The time period from May to October should be avoided because of heavy snow and low temperatures.
