  Azerbaijan is the largest country in the Caucasus and it is positioned at the crossroads of Eastern Europe and Western Asia. It is bordered by the Caspian Sea to the east, Russia to the north, Georgia to the northwest, Armenia to the west, and Iran to the south. Azerbaijan is an Islamic republic and a former Soviet country -a nation rich in oil with a crucial strategic importance in the geopolitical relations in the Caucasus. Throughout centuries, Azerbaijan was incorporated into most empires, including Russian, Turkish and Persian.

 
  Nowadays, tourism in Azerbaijan registers a continuous development. Tourists are attracted by the ancient cities, palaces, mausoleums, and the 6000 historical monuments of Azerbaijan. The major tourist attractions in Azerbaijan are: Apsheron Peninsula, Baku, Atesgah "Fire" Temple, Qobustan Museum, Xinaliq, Surakhani. 
 
  The best time to visit Azerbaijan is between April and October, when the weather is warm and dry in most parts of the country. July and August are the best months to visit the mountain towns such as Xinaliq, however in the capital Baku the air is very humid and temperatures can reach 38 degrees Celsius.
