Santa Clara is located halfway between Havana and Camaguey, about 196 km to the south-east of Varadero. The whole city evokes history: the monuments from the colonial era, restaurants and colonial hotels. About 8 km from Santa Clara, the most important university in Cuba is located, so that students endow the city with a youthful dynamic energy.
About Cubanacan, which is located near the city of Santa Clara, Christopher Columbus thought it was an Indian village. He mistakenly assumed that he discovered the shores of Asia. The predecessor of Santa Clara was founded in 1689 by the colonists who arrived from Remedios, who were trying to protect themselves from pirates. In 1692 the total number of population in Remedios decreased sharply after the city was destroyed in a fire, after which the development of the city of Santa Clara took a new impetus. In 1867, Santa Clara became the residence of the province of Las Villas, and in 1873 the railway starting from Havana got here. This was the first city which was liberated from the domination of Batista's troops in December 1958. Che Guevara, the revolutionary hero was buried here after he passed away, that is why Santa Clara is called "the city of Che".
The main attractions in Santa Clara are: Ernesto Che Guevara Monument, Abel Santamaria Provincial Museum, the park Vidal, La Caridad Theater, the Museum of Decorative Arts, City Hall, Church of Our Lady, the Palace of Justice.
