Since 1994, when Russian soldiers left the country, Estonia has continuously developed its economic and political relations with Western European countries. It joined NATO and the EU in 2004. Among the former Soviet republics, Estonia is now the country with the highest standards of living and is considered the richest Baltic country, resembling rather Sweden than its neighbors, Russia or Poland. If Estonia can be crossed from one border to another in less than five hours, than the diversity of landscape, flora and fauna is really unusual for a small country. Estonians feel as related to Finland both geographically and ethnically, borrowing much of their culture and practices. Their opening to the West has helped a lot: typical Western malls, luxury cars, restaurants and a vibrant night life with clubs have brought color to the image of this country.
Nature, architecture and the complex and profound history of Estonia attracts most of the tourists. In the western part, tourists visit the white sand beaches and islands of the Baltic Sea coast. Also, other major attractions are Saaremaa, Tallinn, Kiek-in-de-Kok; the islands that are part of Hiiumaa: Saarnaki Hanikatsi, Vareslaid. The best time to travel to Estonia is spring (April and May) and summer (June -early September). July and August are the warmest, crowded and rainy months. Winter is a good ski season, ideal for "ice fishing", skating and enjoying the amazing scenery.
