Croatia is situated in south-eastern Europe, in the Balkan Peninsula. Boundaries divide the country to the north from Slovenia and Hungary; Serbia and Montenegro to the east; Bosnia and Herzegovina to the south-east. To the West, Croatia has access to Adriatic Sea, which separates it from Italy. The capital and largest city is Zagreb.
Tourism, which played an important role in Croatia's economy before the 1990’s, is undergoing a recovery process, being strongly affected by the events in former Yugoslavia. The major tourist destinations in the country are: the capital city Zagreb, with rich historical and art monuments, the coastline of Adriatic sea with numerous seaside resorts, and its islands, many of them sheltering spas and historical monuments. Most people choose to visit Croatia between April and September, even if April is too cool to be able to bathe in the sea water.
