  Albania is a country situated in the south-eastern part of the Balkan Peninsula and covers an area of 28,748 km2, of which 27 398 km2 is represented by land and 1350 km2 is water. It is bordered by Montenegro to the northwest, Kosovo to the northeast, the Republic of Macedonia to the east and Greece to the south and southeast; in the west there is the Adriatic and Ionian Sea. Albania's borders extend on 717 km, of which 362 km are coastline. The climate is Mediterranean in the West and continental in the North and East. The relief is predominantly mountainous and compared to its total surface, Albania is the most mountainous country in Europe (nearly 75% of the territory is covered by mountains); the highest peak is Mali i Korab (2751 m).

 

  Tourism in Albania is currently in development, as the former communist regime did not allow tourism in the country. The first tourists allowed in the country where from the western part in 1980. Albania accommodates about 50,000 tourists a year.

 

  If you come to visit Albania, make sure to not miss visiting Durres city, one of the oldest in Europe; Vlore - the main Albanese spa; Shkoder; Berat - a real town-museum; the region of the Prespes and Ohrit lakes. The best time to visit Albania is May, June and September, when it is not too hot and not too crowded. In September, the days are warm, the perfect timing for a holiday in Albania.
