Austria is located in Central Europe. It is bordered by: Germany and the Czech Republic to the North; Slovakia and Hungary to the East; Slovenia and Italy to the South; Switzerland and Lichtenstein to the west.
It is a mountainous region, mostly due to the Alps: Central Eastern Alps, Nordic Limestone Alps, Southern Limestone Alps; only a quarter of the country can be considered lowland -mainly in the East. Geographically, it can be divided into five areas: Austrian Alps which represent 62% of the total area of Austria; Austrian foothills at the base of the Alps and the Carpathians - about 12% of its territory; the foothills in the east and areas surrounding the periphery of the Pannoni Plain - 12%; the second mountain range located in the north, Austrian granite plateau, in central Bohemia - 10% and Vienna Basin - 4%.
