Pere Lachaise Cemetery in Paris is one of the most famous and fascinating places in the world, attracting thousands of visitors each year. It is no wonder, if we think about the great personalities that have found their eternal peace here: Moliere, Marcel Proust, Jim Morrison, Oscar Wilde, Edith Piaf, Honore de Balzac, Chopin and others.
Stretching over 44 hectares with more than 12,000 trees, it is a true oasis of greenery and an outdoor museum. The name of the necropolis (Nekropolis in Greek language means "the city of the dead") comes from Louis IV's confessor, Père François de la Chaise. The cemetery was opened by Emperor Napoleon Bonaparte, who appointed the famous architect Alexandre-Théodore Brongniart to handle this project. When the cemetery "was put into operation" in 1804, it attracted few funerals because it was located too far from the town. The cemetery administration used a marketing strategy and organized with great pomp the transfer of corpses of La Fontaine and Molière, which turned to be a very good strategy.
The cemetery of nonconformism is now probably the most visited cemetery in the world. The main attraction of this cemetery, besides the beauty and variety of landscape architecture, is the great personalities who are buried here forever. Buried post-mortem in the same place, Pierre Abelard (1079-1142) and Heloise (1101-1162) express their eternal love. Pierre Bourdieu (1930-2002), I. Auguste M. F. X. Comte (1798-1857), Jean-Francois Lyotard (1924-1998) and Maurice Merleau-Ponty (1908-1961) complete the philosophy. Other tributes can be brought to Honoré de Balzac, Frédéric Chopin, George Enescu, Moliere, La Fontaine, Marcel Proust. Two graves beneficiate from special security: Jim Morrison and Oscar Wilde.
Jim Morrison's grave (1943-1971) is the most visited grave. Due to vandalism and the number of visitors who want to see it, the cemetery administration has adopted a permanent program of personal security. The modest monument is always "decorated" with tickets and declarations of love poems, alcohol bottles, candles and flowers.
