Trastevere, Rome's oldest neighborhood, is one of the most beautiful areas in the city, unforgettable both during day and night visits. Located on the other side of the river Tiber, the neighborhood is one of the most picturesque of Rome, with its narrow cobbled streets lined by medieval houses. Legend says that the church was built on the site where on the birth of Jesus Christ, a well with olive oil has sprung. This church was founded by San Callisto in 211 and completed by San Giulio in 341; it has been rebuilt in the XIIth century by Innocentius II. The present nave preserves the original basilica plan, standing on the earlier foundations. The 22 granite columns with Ionic and Corinthian capitals originate from the ruins of the Baths of Caracalla. The interior is adorned with beautiful mosaics; there should be mentioned the mosaics by Cavallini representing episodes from Virgin’s Mary life. The Romanesque campanile is from the 12th century. The mosaics on the beautiful facade are probably from the 12th century as well.

This church is simply charming and will offer you the privacy you need. Since medieval times, the church has been a place of worship for Virgin Mary. It is also the only church in Rome that has not undergone any great changes throughout time.
