About 3-6 million years ago, underwater volcanoes about 700 km west of Ecuador erupted. As a result, there was formed an archipelago consisting of 60 islands of different sizes, called the Galapagos Islands. Here there have developed forms of animal and plant life which are unique in the world.
English naturalist Charles Darwin arrived on the islands for the first time in 1835. He was impressed by the multitude of species encountered and how they evolved over time, observations are recorded in the famous work "On the origin of species". In 1959, the Government of Ecuador declared the Galapagos Islands a national park, in order to protect flora and fauna.
