With a population of 4.5 million inhabitants, Sydney is the largest, oldest and most beautiful city in Australia. Located where water joins land at Jackson Bay, Sidney is a natural harbor on the southeastern coast of the Australian continent.
The most important places in Sydney are: the Harbour Bridge, Sydney Tower (305 m hight - the highest building in southern hemisphere) and Opera, representative for the city, famous throughout the world. The heart of the city is formed by a huge natural harbor, with an area of more than 55 square kilometers and arms that extend on all parts - the remains of a system of underground networks. The town is bordered to the west and north by the waterside; to the east by the green lands of the Royal Botanic Gardens, Domain and Hyde Park and to the south by the Central Station.
Sydney is a city that abounds and loves night life and this aspect should not be forgotten, whether you try the street bars and clubs on Oxford Street or you relax in the neighborhood traditional breweries Kings Cross and The Rock. After dark, the illumination animates the city, especially in the Sydney Opera House and Circular Key, where you can enjoy ballet performances and classical music concerts.
In contrast with the newer cities with large and well-appointed public spaces, Sydney streets are arranged in a complicated and irregular manner, due to the gradual development –from the original colonial settlement to the city of today, with an area of 12,400 square km, alike old cities in Europe. The colony's first governor, Arthur Phillip, had great plans - large markets, wide streets and imposing public buildings, but his successors have not accomplished these plans and Sydney has developed with narrow streets and buildings adapted to the outline. As a result, the streets were too narrow even by the time when travel was made by carriages.
Sydney has a wide range of luxury-class hotels, which are usually fully occupied during the week, but offer discounts on weekends. Besides the more moderate priced hotels, there are many other places with cheap accommodation, especially in the Kings Cross area. For a longer stay you can rent an apartment, or you can stay in houses with full board at reasonable prices.
