The "artificial" capital of Brazil was built only for four years and became a true example of modern architecture. Built in 1957 by Lucio Costa and architect Oscar Niemeyer, Brasilia was designed as a cross, but now more like a giant butterfly. Among its iconic building include Palacio da Alvarado (president of Brazil's capital), cultural complex of the republic, the Cathedral Basilica and government buildings.
