Bangkok in Thailand
Bangkok is a bustling city -crowded and very exotic. Often called "the City of Angels" or "Venice of the East", Bangkok has 22 areas that deserve the title of "city center", over 400 temples, 800 hotels and a lot of skyscrapers. The town was originally a small fair, known as Bang Makok and the complete name is Krung Thep Maha Nakhon. Bangkok is now the place where very tall buildings are built with amazing rapidity. The rich culture and countless places to be visited in Bangkok make it one of the most popular holiday destinations in Asia. Each year, over 15 million tourists come here to discover its wonders. Bangkok dominates the urban hierarchy and the political, cultural, commercial life in Thailand since the eighteenth century. Although modern and Western-oriented, Bangkok is still a sleepy Thai village in the traffic noise and night life. The city has no sleep on the east side of the river Chao Phraya. Noisy, sweaty, exotic Bangkok is a city full of life. For some, the frenetic pace, heat, traffic and lack of personal space can be overwhelming, but for many others the sheer dynamism is intriguing.
With an interesting mix between traditional East and modern West, every street in Bangkok provides surprises for visitors. Ramshackle buildings curl up next to the exotic temples surrounded by delightful gardens, above which luxurious hotels and modern office buildings rise. But traditional Thai life style is never far away. Walking among cars stopped in traffic, the monks in “saffron” collect offerings, while a few steps away from downtown, whole communities still live in houses on stilts near the river, earning their living with occupations that has not changed for centuries.
