One of the greatest works of Roman architecture and probably the world's most renowned ruin is the Roman Colosseum or Coliseum - is an elliptical amphitheater in downtown Rome (Italy), the largest ever built in the Roman Empire.
50,000 seats Colosseum was built for gladiatorial fights and public spectacles. Other public events: the greatest fighting game in the world, hunt animals, executions, famous battles. It is said that the Coliseum over 500,000 people have died and one million wild animals.
With all that in XXI century Colosseum is partly a ruin as a result of devastating earthquakes and stone forts, remains the symbol of the Roman Empire. It is one of the most popular tourist attractions in Rome and kept close ties with the Roman Catholic church. Every Friday the Pope leads a job "Way of the Cross" procession around the different levels of the amphitheater.
