Modern Brazilian Carnival has its roots in Rio de Janeiro, when, in 1641, the town bourgeoisie imported from Paris habit of keeping masked balls and parties. Initially, the European form mimic the festival, but later absorbed elements derived from African and American cultures.
In the late 19th century in Rio de Janeiro have emerged "cordões" masked groups that marched on city boulevards singing and dancing. Today, known as "block" consisting of a special group of people in suits or shirts with themes and logos. block are generally associated with certain neighborhoods.
Parades they have become an expressive feature of the Carnival in Rio. Today, counted more than 100 groups and the number is increasing every year. Before the show, gather in a market, then scrolling in some areas of the city, but very often on the beach. Some are never a road block and have a special place like a bar, which attracts viewers.
The most famous block are those of Copacabana, Ipanema, Leblon, Lagoa, Jardim Botanico, and the city center. Monobloco became so famous that a group is invited to sing at parties throughout the year and smaller concerts.
The samba schools are large groups of artists, singers or dancers, funded by respected organizations (as well as illegal gambling groups) working all year to prepare the carnival. Samba schools offer the Sambadrome performances that last four nights. I am part of an official competition, divided into seven sections, in which one school is declared the winner, depending on the costumes, music and themes and calitatatea interpretation. Some samba schools hold street parties in their neighborhoods and participate in the parade and their admirers.
Carnival is the most popular celebration in Brazil and has become an event of gargantuan proportions. Tara stops completely for about a week and the festivities are intense, day and night, especially in coastal cities. Government distributes free condoms and launch awareness campaigns to prevent the spread of AIDS.
