Plaza de Espana is an imposing architectural complex that was made to serve as a central department of Iberico-American Exposition, an event held in Seville in 1929 for what was meant closer ties between Spain and former colonies in Latin America. Plaza de Espana is located in Maria Luisa Park, near the historical center of Seville.
Exhibition in Seville in 1929 was organized for improving of the relations between Spain, Portugal and former colonies. Each country has built a pavilion, but unlike other shows, these pavilions were constructed to withstand and after the exhibition. Part of the exhibition center and administrative offices were in the Plaza de Espana, designed by architect Anibal Gonzalez, who has been involved in building and other pavilions at the exhibition. Today the building is occupied by government offices and regional military offices.
Plaza de Espana is a complex harmonic in the Renaissance style popular at that time. Red brick structure decorated with colored tiles. Two tall towers linked by a central structure through a gallery with many columns. Curved facade follows the outline of a market with a massive central fountain. Small square is surrounded by a canal and bridges decorated with beautiful ceramic tiles market connecting with a wide promenade that passes in front of the building.
The entire complex is decorated with azulejos, painted tiles that are very popular in Seville and you can find almost everywhere in town. Façade of the building, a row of lanterns and bridges in the Plaza de Espana are decorated with colored azulejos. The piece de resistance is but a series of 58 banks that are found along the main building facade. Banks are completely covered with azulejos and a series of drawings depicting allegorical represent provinces of Spain.
