Cliffs of Moher (Cliffs of Moher in English, Irish Aillte Mhothair year, "Cliffs of Ruins") are sets of cliffs located on the town of Liscannor at the south-west of Burren in County Clare, Ireland. The cliffs are up to 214 m above the Atlantic Ocean on a length of 8 km.
The tower O'Brien (O'Brien tower) was built in 1835, amid the cliffs by Sir Cornelius O'Brien to provide a vantage point for the many tourists who were already on the site. On a clear day you can see also the Aran Islands and Galway Bay, which lie off the mountains of Connemara (and the Maumturk Twelves Bens).
A must for tourism in Ireland, the Cliffs of Moher fascinated by their beauty and breathtaking slopes. These masses of limestone and shale eroded by wind and ocean, often raging near the coast, are trampled by more than one million tourists per year, which has implications on the wilderness. Some facilities have been built to protect this exceptional site.
Since 2008, this area is protected to preserve the wild life, mainly consisting of marine birds. The presence of man has materialized with the construction of many partitions or stone walls that separate them (unfortunately for the view) the flow of tourists from the seascape.
