Schreckhorn Peak
Schreckhorn represents a steep and a rocky mountain peak, beautifully surrounded by ice. The Schreckhorn, located only 10 km south-east of Grindelwald makes the connection between the Upper and Lower Grindelwald Glacier. The splendid region is surprisingly beautified by uninhabited glacial valleys, the great Aar Glaciers and the Fiescher Glacier. The dramatic summit of the Lauteraarhorn is located nearby, featuring almost the same altitude. The highest peak of the Bernese Alps, called the Finsteraarhorn is located 10 km to the south. Schreckhorn lies in the Eastern Bernese Oberland, rising up between Grimsel and the Fiescher and Eismeer Glaciers. This peak with the Lauteraarhorn create an impressive double-summit. Schreckhorn is the culmination point of a 10 Km ridge that leads from the Northwest to the Southeast over Mettenberg. This peak is considered the most rugged and the hardest 4.000 meter mountain in the whole Bernese Alps, providing spectacular panoramas, perfect for an incredible vacation.
It is also recognized as the highest point on a long, narrow craggy ridge. The region includes many smaller peaks on this ridge as well. Schreckhorn is the most difficult peak to climb in the European Alps, that’s due to the 2000-foot rock tower that marks its fantastic summit. The standard route on the peak starts in Grindelwald via the Schreckhornhütte, continuing to the southwest ridge then it runs to the summit.
From the geological point of view the Schreckhorn peak is part of the Aarmassif. The majestic mountain is very hard to approach, from each of its sides. What makes Schreckhorn the best destination for mountaineers are its challenging and spectacular rocky ridges, such as those from the northwest and southwest.
The first ascent took place on 16 August 1861 by Leslie Stephen, Ulrich Kaufmann, Christian Michel and Peter Michel. Their standard route made via the upper Schreck Couloir to the Schrecksattel and then by the south-east ridge. This was the most perfect route for the following fifty years, which nowadays is not so used.
The peak had been climbed and admired many times before this, with the most important made by the Swiss naturalist Joseph Hugi in 1828 and the guided party of Pierre Jean Édouard Desor, which was organized in 1842. Situated just down the road from Grindelwald, this amazing mountain is a little bit hidden by the formidable Eiger. Its enchanting challenging rocky ridges have received the title of the hardest 4,000m peak to bag in the Bernese Alps, and this seems to be the best reason why you won’t find too many tourists on its great slopes.
The atmosphere at this wonderful summit is really fascinating, with lovely places where to spend interesting activities, or to enjoy exciting adventures. Schreckhorn peak is a magnificent destination for those who like the risk and its fabulous results. It rises as a huge and unique mountain that delights your eyes with dramatic views and outstanding landscapes. Even if it is hard to climb it, many enthusiasts are tempted to do this and they experience the most adventurous attempt of their lives here, admiring the scenic beauty that opens the tremendous peak.
