Baracoa is a colonial city rich in tourist attractions, located between two bays on an isthmus with tropical vegetation. Christopher Columbus called this land Porto Santo and devoted a special note for the anvil-shaped mountain El Yunque. This area of the country boasts dense forests, coconut and citrus groves –here one will find the most tropical atmosphere in Cuba. Besides the coconut nut, there is another major product, the cocoa, from which the famous and special body creams are produced; it is also used as raw material in Baracoa Peters chocolate factory.
Baracoa was the first village founded by the Spanish colonialists in Cuba. It was founded in the year of 1512 by Diego Velazquez and 300 of his comrades. However, in order to possess the land, he had to fight with the indigenous people of Hatuey. Baracoa was the capital of the colony until 1515, when Velazquez moved to Santiago de Cuba. The city was accessible only from the sea, so it was completely isolated from other parts of Cuba until 1960, when La Farola highway was built, which starts from Cajobabo. The town deserves to be visited because it hides breathtaking panoramas.
Baracoa attractions are: the Cathedral of Our Lady, Manuel Fuente tobacco factory, Veteran center, Matachin fortress, Fuerta de la Punta fortress, Castillo de Seboruco fortress.
