The imposing British Museum exhibits works of art created from prehistoric times up until nowadays, presenting human culture from its beginnings to the present in impressive collections that bring together masterpieces from all over the world.
A museum of human history and culture, it is currently one of the largest and most comprehensive museums in the world. The museum was founded in the mid eighteenth century, in 1753, on the basis of the collections from different areas of the physician and scientist Hans Sloane. The collection consisted of over 80,000 items which included fossils, plants, coins, medals and drawings. In 1753 the government of the time bought the collection of Hans Sloane. Since then, the museum has enriched and expanded its permanent collections, so that the exhibits had to be divided today into 10 departments: Department of Ancient Egypt and Sudan, Department of Greek and Roman Antiquities, Department of the Middle East, Department of Prints and Drawings, Department of Asia, Department of Africa, Oceania and the Americas, the Department of Coins and Medals, Department of Prehistory and Europe, Department of Conservation and Scientific Research, Libraries and Archives.
In this museum, you can admire almost everything: from money, watches, representations of animals, ancient artifacts up to jewelry and books, which you can read anytime in the huge lecture hall (found on the ground floor in the center of the museum). The vast collection of ancient art works (houses 7 million artifacts, of which 4 million can be visited, with 90 permanent and temporary exhibitions), attracts more than 6 million visitors per year. Among the outstanding works displayed at the British Museum there are included the famous works such as Rosetta Stone, sculptures from the Parthenon and the Portland Vase. If you can not reach the Egyptian Museum in Cairo, you can admire the largest and most comprehensive collection of ancient Egyptian materials except the Cairo one.
The main attraction is the magnificent grandeur of the lecture hall, which was recently renovated and now has a modern information center.
