Avila is one of the most romantic and beautiful cities in Spain. You will never confuse it with another city due to the fortress wall that surrounds it. It is the oldest and best preserved city wall, something in which Spain has no shortage. With its resistant medieval walls, the city looks more like a mountain fortress from far away. The city is one of the most highly located cities in Spain and there is always chilly weather here. Also, it is one of the cities with the highest number of churches and catering establishments in relation to the number of its inhabitants. Avila is patronized by St. Teresa, a nun who lived in the sixteenth century, born in a Hebrew family but got into the monastery to survive Inquisition.
Avila Cathedral is one of the main attractions in the city. As appearance, the cathedral is remarkably similar to a military fortress. It was built in the XIIth century by architect Fruchel. However, not all researchers share this opinion. There is another theory that states that Alvar Garcia started its construction in 1091 on the remains of the Church of the Saviour, which was destroyed as a result of successive Muslim attacks. Inside the Cathedral there can be admired nine chapels. The most famous one is the chapel of St. Nicholas. One of the chapels houses a museum and the sacristy of the cathedral.
The facade is decorated by a tower of nearly 43 meters, in which there are visible elements of the Roman Gothic and Baroque style. Inside the cathedral is decorated with beautiful white and pink stone. The guides draw attention of tourists on the harmonious dual space of the apse chapel. The bright interior of the cathedral is filled with elongated arches and beautiful coats of arms.
By the main altar, there is a unique piece - a carved alabaster tomb of El Tostado, the work of Vasco de la Zarza. Also here there is located the alabaster tomb of Don Alonso de Madrigal. In the cathedral there is a museum, whose main attraction is the silver monstrance by Juan de Harp used during religious processions.
